Especially foods containing iron, vitamin B12 and folate increase hemoglobin production and strengthen the body's oxygen carrying capacity.


What is Anemia?

Anemia; It develops as a result of the hemoglobin or red blood cells in the blood falling below normal levels. This causes the tissues to not receive enough oxygen. Menstrual bleeding, pregnancy, malnutrition and malabsorption are among the most common causes in women.


What are the symptoms of anemia?

The most common symptoms of anemia are:

  • Weakness and constant fatigue

  • Pale skin and lips

  • Shortness of breath and palpitations

  • Headache and dizziness

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Hair loss, nail breakage

  • Coldness in hands and feet

Symptoms may vary from person to person and their severity may vary depending on the underlying causes.


What are the Types of Anemia?

Anemia does not occur for a single reason. The most common types are:

  • Iron Deficiency Anemia: It is the most common type of anemia. Iron deficiency may develop with menstrual bleeding or occult bleeding.

  • Vitamin B12 Deficiency: It may also affect the nervous system.

  • Folate Deficiency Anemia: It is common with pregnancy and inadequate vegetable consumption.

  • Anemia of Chronic Disease: It may occur in conditions such as kidney diseases, infection and cancer.

  • Hemolytic Anemia: It occurs with the premature destruction of red blood cells.

Proper nutrition increases the effectiveness of treatment in anemia. Foods rich in iron, B12 and folate should be included regularly.

Recommendations:

  • Consume foods rich in iron: Red meat, offal, eggs, legumes, spinach and other green leafy vegetables

  • Supplement with vitamin C: Orange, lemon, kiwi, pepper; increases iron absorption

  • Don't neglect sources of B12: Fish, chicken, eggs, dairy products and red meat

Things to Consider in Anemia

Some foods can reduce iron absorption:

  • Tea and coffee: Reduces iron absorption due to tannin. It should be consumed 1–2 hours after meals.

  • Dairy products: Calcium may limit iron absorption. It should not be taken at the same meal with iron sources.

  • Refined grains and white bread: They are insufficient in terms of nutrients.

  • Sugary and processed foods: May negatively affect the treatment.
